Maternity
Program

In November 2023, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) launched a $113 million program to provide free maternity care for women during pregnancy and up to one month after delivery. Supported by the World Bank, the program also offers free healthcare for newborns during their first 28 days of life. The goal is to remove financial barriers that prevent access to essential maternal and newborn services.

The DRC ranks fourth among eight countries responsible for over 50% of maternal deaths worldwide, after India, Nigeria, and Pakistan. Despite efforts by the government and partners to reduce maternal mortality, many women still die during childbirth. This highlights the need to improve knowledge of maternal health among women and healthcare workers, and to support women in preparing birth plans to reduce delays in seeking care.

4Congo contributes by covering additional medical costs after childbirth and by supporting mothers with supplies and education as they leave the hospital and begin life with their newborns.
